For
the last 3 years Tony Wilson of Manu
Tours have been contucting birding tours in the "Austalia's
Top End"
Australia
has over 750 recorded bird species, of which 320 are endemic, in
addition to an amazing collection of mammals, reptiles and amphibians.
Australia is a vast continent so we have chosen to focus on the
tropical areas, which are rich in birds and other life forms. The
tour is planned to be as relaxing as possible by staying close to
the best sites and limiting long days of travel to a minimum. We
will endeavor to find the specialty birds for each of the areas
we visit.
Our
tour will take us to the Darwin area with its rivers, swamps and
billabongs, home to the Great-billed Heron, Chestnut Rail,
Black Butcherbird, Varied Lorikeet, Large-billed Gerygone, Rose-crowned
Fruit-dove and Rainbow Pitta. We will also explore the
wonders of world famous Kakadu National Park, with its incredible
scenery.
In
the Cairns region, we will visit such diverse habitats as coastal
mangroves and many of the different forest types. A wonderful assemblage
of shorebirds can be found along the Cairns waterfront, including
Greater and Lesser Sandplovers, Terek
and Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, and Black-tailed
and Bar-tailed Godwits. Double-eyed
Fig-Parrots and Southern Cassowary are
often seen in the coastal parks. No tour to this area would be complete
without a visit to the Great Barrier Reef. We will visit Michaelmas
Cay with its thousands of breeding Brown Noddys, Sooty Terns,
Bridled Terns, Lesser-crested Terns, and Brown
Boobys. We will also have the opportunity to snorkel this
magnificent reef.
In
the rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands area we'll look for Bush-hen,
Buff-banded Rail, Tooth-billed Catbird, Golden Bowerbird, Bridled
Honeyeaters and Atherton Scrubwren. Amongst the open country and
wetlands of this refreshing area we have also seen Wompoo
Fruit-dove, Toothbilled Bowerbird, Grass Owl, Sarus Crane
and Wedge-tailed Eagle. Some of the regularly seen
mammals include Platypus, Striped Possum, Tree Kangaroo and Red-legged
Pademelon.
LAMINGTON
EXTENSION
Depending upon interest, we have scheduled a flight to Brisbane
and a drive to Lamington National Park. We will overnight for 3
night's at the famed O'Reilly's Guest House,
